On October 12, 2000, the Kursk, a Russian nuclear submarine carrying 118 crewmembers, sank in the Barents Sea.  The Russian government insisted that the entire crew died within minutes of the explosion. Six weeks later the world learned the truth.  After the initial explosion, Russian naval officer Dmitry Kolesnikov had written a note which was later found by a Russian diver.
